About Potassium Fertilizers
India imports 100% of its potassium requirement (no domestic potash reserves). MOP (Muriate of Potash) is the primary potassium fertilizer — imported from Canada, Russia, and Belarus. SOP (Sulphate of Potash) is preferred for chloride-sensitive crops like fruits and vegetables.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between MOP and SOP?
MOP (KCl) contains 60% K₂O + chloride. SOP (K₂SO₄) contains 50% K₂O + sulphate instead of chloride. MOP is cheaper and suitable for most field crops. SOP is preferred for: grapes, pomegranate, potato, tomato, export-quality fruits where chloride affects quality, and organic farming (SOP is approved, MOP is not).
Why is potash not produced in India?
India has no economically viable potash deposits. All MOP and SOP is imported. The only partial exception is Rajasthan where low-grade sylvinite exists, but mining is not yet commercially viable. India imports 4–5 MT of MOP annually, spending Rs 15,000–25,000 crore in foreign exchange.
